May 5, 2011-----LIS 489

Time: 8:00 am -11:25 am
12:55 pm - 3:35 pm

The day was really busy because of the different events that happened while I was at Petal High School. The day consisted of putting books in to the system, helping check-in and -out books, help collecting food for the people up north who were affected by the resent disasters. The donations were awarded with the students being able to wear a non-uniformed t-shirt on that Friday or pay fines that they had on fine with in the library. Most of the students came in and choose to use the donated can to wear a t-shirt. The box that the cans were in was full by the time I left the high school library. I expect that some of the students would come in the next morning to get their ability to wear their own t-shirt. They had to initial next to their name just to indicate that it was them.

This is my last day to do my practicum hours. The hours amounted to about 182 hours and 15 minutes. I enjoyed my experience with Ms. Sorensen, the faculty and the many students at Petal High School. Thank you everyone.

May 3, 2011------LIS 489

Time: 8:00 am -11:30 am
12:00 pm - 4: 15 pm

In the morning, I proctored for the State Exam. When I was out of the testing room because the students were finished with the Biology test. I was out by 11:00 am and went to the library. Put away some books that had come in to the library. Helped where I was needed. I helped Ms. Sorensen with putting the students' over-dues and fines notices together and took me a long time with help.

Time: 8:00 am -11:35 am
12:55 pm - 3:30 pm

Worked as a proctor in the morning and then went to the library for the afternoon. Things I did for the rest of the day were put books on shelves, helped students get the materials they needed, and helped check in and out materials or equipment to the patron. So, next Tuesday, I will be proctoring for the State Test.

Tuesday, April 26, 2011-----LIS 489

Time: 8:00 am - 11:30 am
12:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Was a busy day with in the library. A lot of the students were needing items like pencils, pens, binders, folders, and many other things. The students were also trying to complete projects that their teachers had assigned. The books that I had processed and were ready to be put on the shelves, were put on the shelves. As soon as the books were on the shelves, more came to be put on the shelves. So, I put the couple of books away.

I heard that the school needed some proctors for the State testing for the different days from Ms. Sorensen. So, I went to the guidance counselor and signed up for Thursday and Tuesday. I had hope that this experience will be a good experience.

I learned that putting books on shelves is fun.

April 21, 2011----LIS 489

Time: 8:00am -11:30 am

Thursday was short, but busy. For the time that I was there at the school, I processed books that I had started on Tuesday.

Reason for leaving early: Doctor's Appointment

April 19, 2011-----LIS 489

Time: 8:00 am - 11:45 am
12:00 pm - 2:15 pm

Tuesday was a fairly busy day. The books on the checked in shelf were put away. Classes came into the library to use the laptops and write papers. Photocopies were made for students and printers were found for printing. Items were sold like notebooks, mechanical pencils, home made clear folders were made to be sold, and construction paper. Helped students find books on different topics. Books were entered into the system and lables for the spine and bar code labels were printed for the books to be fully processed. Started the process of putting labels on the materials.

Lesson was that keeping busy lets time fly much faster.

April 12, 2011-----LIS 489

Time: 8:00 am to 11:30 am
12:00 pm to 3:00 pm

Tuesday was a fairly busy day. The books were put away that were checked in. The shelves were scanned while putting up books. Laptops were checked in and out by the teacher aids for the classes that came into the library. Helped some students find books on several topics. Helped with collecting fines.

April 7, 2011-----LIS 489

Time: 8:00 am - 11:25 am
12:45 pm - 2:55 pm

Thursday was slow as well. The library was closed due Ms. Sorensen going to the Children's Fair on USM campus. During the times that I was there, I worked on school materials and helped who ever needed help. I did help judges in finding student project boards and helped teachers with minor things like find printers. Students did come in and out of the library to look at the boards with the permission of their teachers.

April 5, 2011-----LIS 489

Time: 8:00 am - 11:25 am
11:55 pm - 3:30 pm

Tuesday was a slow day for the library due to the project boards that were on display and not al ot of students were coming into the library. The seniors at Petal High School have to do projects for the community, arts and crafts, bring awareness, and many other topics. of their choose. The students draft their projects in their junior year. So, they can have their projects approved before they can go ahead with their projects in the summer or during their senior year. The ones that I viewed were rather interesting and the projects were the arts projects and technology projects. An example is the project of building a CPU that can withstand water. I found that interesting, because I have never thought of using water as a way to cool the CPU.

Other than looking at the project boards, the books were put away and I helped the judges of the project boards find their student that they were to judge.

March 31, 2011-----LIS 489

Time: 8:00 am - 11:30 am
12:50 pm - 3:30 pm

Thursday was a busy day, also. Books that had been returned were placed on shelves and during the placement. I found books that were out of place and I placed them back. After placing the books and cleaning up, I helped the teacher's aids check in and out laptops, computers, renew books, and locate computers. On this day, Ms. Sorensen needed help pulling up schedules for students to tell them of their overdue books with the program called SAM. After all the students schedules were printed. We cut up the overdue spreadsheet into sections under students names and stapled them to the proper schedules that were printed out. When most of them were done, two of the teacher's aids helped sort them into teachers or rooms, and then the papers were placed into boxes by the halls that the room numbers were on.

I learned that sometimes a librarian has to do the unpleasant things to be able to keep things in order and his/her inventory kept.

March 29, 2011-----LIS 489

Time: 8:00 am - 11:25 am
11:55 am - 3:50pm

Tuesday was a very busy day. First, the books were put on the 'return to shelves' were put away. Through the day, the 'teacher's aids' and I check out materials/equipment and check in materials/equipment and I helped when needed. Also, some new books were put into the system and printers were found for printing for students plus teachers. I cleaned up the shelves that looked overly messy and placed books back to their proper place.

I learned that many days can repeat themselves and they are not all bad.

March 24,2011 ----------- LIS489

Time: 8:00 am - 11:25 am
11:35am - 3:50 pm

Thursday, this day was full of teachers getting their students help in researching papers for the classes that they were in at that time. The students used laptops to look up information. Some of the students needed help to print off materials for their class. During the times when the classes came to the library and when they left. I found opportunities to find and print new title covers for the books that were either missing the entire title cover or the front is totally messed up. When finished with the pile of books, I started to put the books away that I had left from Tuesday. Plus, more books that had arrived from the time I left till the time I started putting them away and finished. During the hole day, I helped Ms. Sorensen do research for a teacher that was doing genres like 'visuals with words' and five more genres. The research was to look up information on websites and then record the websites that I though would be appropriate for the group project. The research was tough in finding bits of information. I gave 'it the old college try' in finding the websites.

The library had volunteers that came in who were subs for teachers that were not there. They helped straighten some selves in the fiction section because of the mess that the patrons leave. Their help was greatly appreciated by Ms. Sorensen.

I learned that research takes time and that we should try to plan ahead in researching topics for classes or projects.

March 22. 2011-----LIS 489

Time: 8:00 am to 3:30 pm (minus 30 min.)

Tuesday, the school started to begin to wind up again for the last part of the semester, the last nine weeks. So, there was not much to do except scan the shelves and while put books into their place. The 'shelf scanning' took a lot of time in the non-fiction section that I had assigned myself for the day to do. I started with 0xx and ended on 3xx. During that time I was also asked to find the printer that was color and which one was black and white for the students that needed to get their document printed.

After, I was done with the scanning of shelves. I found that more student patrons had turned in more books and decided to leave those for Thursday. Next, I placed more books into the system that Ms. Sorensen had given me to do for the day. I had asked her if there were any books to put into the system and she game me those books. During the processing of the books to the system, I helped who ever needed me when Ms. Sorensen was taking care of someone else.

I learned that some days will be slow, and that is a good point to assign yourself projects. For the reason of not being able to when you are busy with a lot of patrons. Slow days can be a prayer.

Spring Break------LIS 489

The school is on Spring Break. Working on the 5000 words paper this week.

Sunday, March 13, 2011

March 10, 2011=====LIS489

Time: 8:00 am to 3:50 pm with a thirty minute lunch

Thursday, the students were taking tests on designated periods. So, in some periods the students could come into the library to do assignments on the desktops or laptops. For the most part of the day, I put books back on shelves; checked in equipment and books; checked out equipment plus books; and helped repair books.

Many books needed to be repair and I helped Ms. Sorensen repair the books that were in the box. She was able to go faster than me in fixing the books. For me, I wanted to be careful in to ruining the books that were under my care to mend. Some of the books that I was given to repair had spine covers coming off the spine of the book. I repaired the book with glue and then some tap to keep the spine covers on tightly.

I learned that being cautious of what you do can be rewarding in the end.

March 8, 2011------LIS 489

Time: 8:00 am to 3:35 pm with a thirty minute lunch break

Tuesday, the students at Petal High School were getting ready for exams on Thursday and Friday. Many of them had to write papers for their exams to give to their teachers. So, the students had to come in to the library to use the computers to write their research or project papers. For the most part, the students were looking for laptops and how to find the printer to print their assignments. The main job for me was to keep the laptops charged for the patrons who needed them.

I also put more books into the system that were piled up on the rolling cart that were needing to be put into the system. Most of the books that I had to catalog into the system because the 'Destiny' program did not recognize the title, ISBN number, or could not find the book by the author. There are two ways to enter the cataloging information. The cataloger can do it the easy way which includes entering the information in to the designated boxes or enter the material by the MARC tags. The choice is the cataloger's choice.

I learned that the easy way is not always the best way to put down the information for cataloging. Some times it is best to use the tags to place the information down onto the paper. Also, the system can help the cataloger find the Dewey Decimal number for placing certain books into certain catalogs like 'cookery' equals 641.

March 4, 2011--------LIS 489

Time: 8:00 am to 11:30 am
12:45 pm to 3:40 pm

Thursday, I put away books that had been accumulating on the return shelf. The books were divided into non-fiction books and fiction books. The books were put away first in the fiction section for those who were fiction. For the non-fiction books, they were divided by the hundreds like 3xx or 5xx. Some times I would see books that were out of place but made a pile and finished with the ones that I started with. After I was done, I put the books that were out of place, into their place. Putting the books back took along time to place but I was done before I went for lunch.
When I returned from lunch, I started to repair books by finding the proper cover for the front covers of the three books that were given to me. I finished with the printing out of the front covers and waited for further instructions from Ms. Sorensen. I wanted to see how she put new front covers over the books. While I waited for her, I found that the shelf for shelving books had filled up again and started to put the books back in their place. I was stopped several times for students needing help with computer, book, and password information. A librarian job never sits still in a school library, do they?

I learned that there might be the same occurrence of jobs like shelving books either on the same day or in a weeks rotation.

March 1, 2011--------LIS 489

Time: 8:00 am to 3:30 pm with a 30 minute break

Tuesday was the day of mostly finishing up processing books that were put into the system. I also helped students find the printers, the patron's log in user name for the computers, check out books, and find books on different topics. A couple of the students needed help finding books on climate environments like deserts. I knew that a class recently brought back books on the topic of different environments, and they were on the return shelf. The books were found from the shelf and then chosen by the students on their specific environment. Some checked out books and some photo copied certain pages.

Part of the processing of the books entailed that the books' outside cover would be covered by plastic sheets to protect the paper outside cover to be torn. The job is tedious but I like completing a job that I started.

I learned that patrons is key, when helping a patron. The librarian would have to work with the paton in finding the right question to ask in order to find a material.

Feburary 24, 2011----LIS 489

Time: 8:00 am to 3:15 pm with a 30 minute break

Thursday was a day for putting a little more books into the cataloging system and processing them to be put on the shelves. Also, Thursday was a day to help student patrons with finding the printers, their passwords, and check them out laptop.

To process the books that I put in the cataloging system starts as:

1. While putting the books in the system: I will give them a bar-code number,
2. I will have a word document that I can put the bar-codes for the labels on the spine and back cover.
3. When finish putting books into the system: I will locate the document when going to the 'back office' section of the library.
4. I will go first to the bar code label section to get the back cover labels ready to print out. I will locate the document with the bar codes for the books through the browser. I will open them for the system to recognize them.
5. Make sure the dimensions are ready and then click on 'report'. I will refresh the list of documents.
6. Open the labels and then print the labels on the label sectioned paper that was placed in the printer.
7. Then take the books that you bar coded and match them up with the labels that were printed out.
8. Put labels on the cover or their proper place and then put a protective plastic sheet over the label. This is for the scanner to read the code better and protect the label from damaging factors.

9. Finally, stamp the book in the front, back and somewhere in the middle with the 'Petal High School Library' logo.

For the spine, the process is the same for locating the same document and making sure everything is ready to print on spine label paper. I placed special sectioned label paper into the printer and printed out. Then, after the labels were printed, the books received their labels from me or a teacher's assistant that was in the library at that time.

Help is a good thing.

Feburary 22, 2011------LIS 489

Time: 8:00 am to 11:45 am
1:00 pm to 3:30 pm

Tuesday was almost the same as the last Tuesday schedule. The computers came out for a class that came into the library. When the period was ending, the coordinator for thesmarttrack.com came in and instructed the students to log off their account and enter the user name and password to log back in. The bell rang and it was up to us to pull up the web page for the students that were going to take the survey online. When that was done, the teacher aids helped check-in the laptops and put them away for the next class to come and use them.

When there were areas of time that were not busy, I put books into the system. I put books on the shelf with the help of a teacher's assistant and the job went quickly. I helped patrons find information that needed to log-in into the computers.

I learned that on busiest of days there is always more to do and making a list can help you through the day. So, you can see what is the most important to accomplish for that day.

Feburary 17, 2011-------LIS 489

Times: 8:00 am -11:30am
12:30 am - 3:35pm

Thursday was a day of non-stop motion of helping with different areas of the library. Today was a similar day of setting up the laptops and the desktops computers for students to use them to do thesmarttrack.com survey. With the help of the T.A.s that are in the library, we were able to check them out, check them in, set up the computers for students, shut them down, put them in there spot to charge, and start all over again.

When we didn't have much students in the library, I took it upon myself to add books to the library system called 'Destiny'. Some of the books that I was adding to the system were scanned to make sure the content was appropriate for young readers. Some of the books were cartoon books called manga which are Japanese, Korean, or another Asian product of cartoon illustrated books. Sometimes what the artist or publishing company considers to be appropriate could be different to the viewings of American readers views.

I learned that sometimes a librarian has to step back from the situation to determine what should be done to suit the patron's needs and the library needs. I learned that a librarian can be busy with minor or major situation at one time and rushing never helps.

Feb. 15, 2011-------LIS 489

Times: 8 - 3:30 with a 30 minutes break

Tuesday at the high school, they were taking a survey for the school to improve its self for the different sections of the school. The site that they used is thesmarttrack.com.

The students had to use the desktops and laptops during the second period plus the third period for them to be able to take the test with such high numbers of students. Technology can throw curve balls at a librarian with pressing wrong buttons on the keyboard or keypad. A librarian has to take a breath and take the technology problem with strides to fix the problem, as I am told by Ms. Sorensen.

For the other periods, I helped with checking in and out books, help students paying their fines, and start a list of bar codes for those books. Those books that have lost the spine label as well as the back cover label. Some students from other classes in the other periods forgot their passwords and user names, I helped them find them. I made copies for students that needed them. I put some of the books back on the shelves because there was so many to put back.

Thursday, Feburary 10, 2011

Time: 8:00 to 11:30
11:55 to 3:35

Thursday seemed to be the same process with the laptops being checked in and out all day. This happened through out the day with classes coming in and out.

I helped finish putting barcode labels on books and spines by putting plastic covers over the labels with the students that worked in the library. Then to finish processing the books, a student and I stamped 'Petal High School' in the front, middle, and back of the book. Then, the books were ready to be shelved for the patrons to check out. I only was able to finish the fiction because of a class coming into do their project and I needed to help with little things like log-in information plus other minor stuff.

I learned that books always fill up the 'To be shelved' shelf quickly or moderately quickly, but doing some everyday will help the pile not overflow.

Feburary 8, 2011 -------- LIS 489

Time: 8:00 am - 3:30 with a break in between of 30 minutes.

Tuesday was a very eventful day at Petal High School. The entire day seemed to be a continuous cycle of taking out the laptop computers; checking them out; letting the students use them; the students using them for projects; checking them in; and then letting them charge. Sometimes the students would forget the log-in information and I could help them with the information. I helped check in books and check them out.

I helped find information about abnormal childhood diseases that the students needed for their research paper or help find information on countries. When the library seemed calm, I helped shelf books that needed to be placed on the shelves to make room for other books that needed to be placed on the shelves.

I tried to help the students and teachers to the best of my capability if they came to me for a question. If I did not know the answer to the question, then, I asked Ms. Sorensen the question.

I learned that librarians can have days that she/he will never stop moving and that sometimes the questions that her/his patrons will ask will keep her/his on their toes. Also, I learned that librarians can be pulled in different directions at once, and sometimes a deep breath can let that librarian slow down to figure out the answer or the problem.

Sunday, February 6, 2011

Feburary, 3, 2010-----LIS 489

Time: 8:00 to 11:30
12:20 to 3:00

Arrived and signed in. Started by looking at which class was coming to the library to use the laptops. I saw that a couple teacher were coming in that day and pulled out the laptops for those classes. The laptops were placed at the counter for students to come and check them out.

Today, Ms. Sorensen assigned me the job of putting covers on books. When the books were done, I put more books back on the shelves. Then, I put some more books into the system. Later, when I came back from seeing my 'Little'. I started the process of putting labels on books and materials with the help of Ms. Sorensen. She told me what to do to get the labels for the spine and the back cover to print out within the system. Then, I started place the labels on books and materials but was stopped by the closing down due to bad weather.

I learned that there are a lot of tedious job(s) in the library, but taking a rest to tackle the later makes it better when going back to the job(s).

Friday, February 4, 2011

Feburary 1, 2011----LIS 489

Time: 8:00 to 3:40 with a lunch break of 30 minutes

This Tuesday seemed different from last Tuesday, because last Tuesday was my first.

For this Tuesday, I first signed in and then I went to go see the officer that works there at the high school. So, I could have an ID to identify myself within the school grounds. I went to the police house at 10 o'clock to get the ID done.

Before and after the ID was made, I helped shelve the books that were on the side cart beside the check-out counter. The other jobs that I helped do was put books into the Destiny system, checked in and out books, helped students find their information to sign in, helped on 'receiving on accounts' with fines and books, and tried to help with other things within the library.

I learned event more that a school librarian has to be flexible in everything she/he does within the library. I learned that shelving books are a constant job and that a librarian has to pay attention to books being out of place. So, that the librarian will have happier patrons, when they are searching for books.

Sunday, January 30, 2011

Thursday, January 27, 2011 LIS 489

Time: 8:00 to 11:25----break----12:30 to 3:40

I signed in at Petal High School for the day. Said 'Good Morning' to the people I past. I first looked at who was coming to the library for a class session on the desktop computers and notebook laptops. There were three teachers who were bringing in their students to do activities. The students have to check out the laptops. So, that the librarian can find out who had it last. I took out the notebook laptops and placed them on the check-out counter for the class that was coming.

I turned my attention to the job that I had started on Tuesday. The process of processing the materials is to first enter the ISBN number, author, title, ISSN number, or LCCN number. Find the material and when that person finds the proper material. They will try to find the one that has more information that the others and can find out the amount of description by clicking 'Details' by the title. Then, click on 'Add Copies' which takes the person to a place to place more information like the bar code, the class cataloging number with the last name right after it, and the price of the book.

The price of the books can be found on the back cover or can be found on the internet. Putting the price into system will help the librarian or the librarian helper to charge the student or faculty member the cost of the material.

During the day, I also helped put the laptops into the laptop center. So they could be charged for the next class, but basically the laptops came in and out all day. I also helped explain to a volunteer how the library was set up and which books go where.

I signed out for the day and left.

Tuesday, January 25, 2011 LIS 489

Time: 8:00 to 3:35 with a thirty minutes for lunch

I arrived at Petal High School to start my practicum. I signed in and headed to the library. Ms. Sue Sorensen is the librarian at the high school. She showed me around the library of where things are placed. Fiction and Reference books had a couple of rows. The class numbered books were and are against the walls.

She introduced me to the system that she and the whole school system used for the libraries and students. The cataloging system is called Destiny that can let students look for books and helps the librarians do their jobs. The librarian puts information in to the system of new materials that they have recieved from donors or what was bought.

During the day, she introduced me to the high school student aids that attend to the library like shelving books.

My main job for the day was putting some of the books that the library received from a donor into the system. This took most of the day, due to the searching for the proper class for the book to be in. I learned that the books that are on the shelves could help a librarian to catalog a new book by the similarities between a book material or other materials . An example would be that a materials is specific to a region, but that person could go to the shelf and get close to the class number.

To put the books into the system, I had to put in a bar code, price of the material, and put a class with the material or categorize it as fiction. I finished a fair amount of books this day and left at the time indicated at the top.
